KARATE & CANDIDATES CITIES
Karate and the WKF have gained considerably from presenting championships in locations that are candidate hosts of the 2020 Olympic Games.
Turkey has just presented the 40th European Junior and Cadet Championships and has proven how perfectly capable it is of hosting European and World Karate events, particularly in stunning, historical Istanbul. Crowded venues and massive organizational success are indicators that the Turks are ready to show how deeply karate has become embedded into their sport culture.
Spain has organized, promoted and presented three successful WKF World Senior Championships; two in Madrid (1980 and 2002) and one in Granada (1992). The most recent event that was staged at the IFEMA facility, which is a notable Madrid venue, attracted a daily average of 8.000 spectators throughout four days of competition. These facts prove why Spain is one of the two pre-eminent countries in the history of hosting WKF events.
Japan is the only other country that has been able to rival Spain in its ability to organize, promote and stage WKF World Championships. Tokyo was the venue for the 1970, 1977 and 2008 World Senior Championships. The most recent event was hosted at the iconic Nippon Budokan, the world renowned center of Japanese martial arts, history, philosophy and education.
