"Small Town, Big Dreams: Lake Placid’s Olympic Story" to air nationally Feb. 27

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – As the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team chases gold at the Vancouver Winter Games, PBS will broadcast a special Feb. 27 national presentation of a new documentary about the village of Lake Placid that marks the 30th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice.

"Small Town, Big Dreams: Lake Placid’s Olympic Story" chronicles the rise of Lake Placid from an unknown mountain town to a winter sports capital that hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980.

Twelve Lake Placid athletes are on the 2010 U.S. Olympic team in Vancouver, including Alpine skier Andrew Weibrecht, who won the bronze medal in last week's Super-G event.

"Small Town, Big Dreams" will air coast to coast on more than 100 PBS stations, Saturday, Feb. 27, the final weekend of the 2010 Vancouver Games. Team USA is seeking its first men's hockey gold since the 1980 Olympics, after its historic defeat of Team Canada Feb. 21 in the preliminary round.

"The story of that 1980 hockey team is in many ways the story of Lake Placid, about ingenuity and underdogs," says Scott F. Carroll, the film’s producer. "Now, thirty years later, another young, underrated hockey team is giving us something to cheer about."

The one-hour documentary includes 1980 Olympic footage as well as old films and photographs blended with audio recordings unearthed from local archives. It was written and directed by former Lake Placid News reporter Marc Nathanson and narrated by New York stage actor Ted Kastenbaum.

The film is presented by Mountain Lake PBS and American Public Television. It is also available on DVD.
